Dehydrated is not the same as dry
Dry skin lacks oil and tends to be a lifelong type. Dehydrated skin lacks water and is a temporary state that any skin type can be in — including oily skin, which often responds to dehydration by producing more oil.
The tell is skin that feels tight yet looks shiny by afternoon, with makeup sitting unevenly and fine lines that look worse than they did a month ago.
Why Brisbane skin gets dehydrated
- Air-conditioned offices and apartments pulling moisture out for most of the day
- Sharp swings between humid outdoors and dry indoor air
- Sun exposure on weekends after a week indoors
- Long hot showers, which strip the barrier faster than most products repair it
The seasonal changes article goes into how this shifts through the year.
What a barrier-first plan looks like
Usually: pause the actives, simplify to a gentle cleanser, a barrier-supporting moisturiser and daily SPF, and give it a few weeks. In-clinic work such as skin health support may follow once the barrier is stable — not before.
Treating a compromised barrier with more active ingredients extends the problem. Restraint is the treatment for a period, and that is a deliberate decision rather than a lack of one.
