Why dental review comes first
Grinding is often a dental and medical matter before it is a cosmetic one. Wear, cracking, pain on chewing and jaw joint symptoms all belong with a dentist, and treating the muscle without addressing the cause can mask a problem worth knowing about.
Our position
Where dental causes are prominent, we recommend dental review before continuing any cosmetic conversation. That is a common outcome of this assessment, not an unusual one.
What the assessment covers
History, muscle activity through the day, facial balance and how the jawline has changed over time — and then, if appropriate, the options with their limitations and risks. The full appointment is described on the jaw muscle relaxation page.
Frequently asked
Jaw tension questions
Do I need to see a dentist first?
Often yes, particularly where there is dental wear or pain. If that applies to you, it will be raised at your consultation.
Can jaw tension change my face shape?
Muscle bulk can change over years with sustained clenching, which some people notice as a squarer lower face. Whether that is what is happening is part of the assessment.
Is this treatment or assessment?
The appointment is an assessment. Whether any option is appropriate follows from it, and is explained with risks and alternatives before any decision.
Will it help my headaches?
Headaches have many causes. Whether jaw muscle activity is contributing is something the assessment considers rather than assumes.
